Armstrong Foils Downwind Performance

The first foils in the Armstrong Performance Series, the Downwind Performance Range, were specifically designed for the SUP Downwind division in the inter-island channels of Hawaii. The DW Performance Series, already proven under the feet of team rider Oskar Johansson at the 2023 Molokai2Oahu World Championship, is tailored for SUP Downwind experts seeking the next level of open-water freedom.

The product of cutting-edge hydrodynamics and foil technology.

Project development began with collecting waveform and real-world riding data from the inter-island channels of Hawaii to establish specific design parameters. Leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) resources helped optimize an airfoil shape that offers extreme glide at the top end with achievable flying speeds at the low end for race starts in milder conditions. The result is remarkably stable at high speeds.

The A+ System

The A+ System is our proprietary foil mounting design that connects the mast, fuselage, front foil, and stabilizer, providing a solid and smooth feel on the water. A hexagonal carbon fiber fuselage with a titanium rod core has progressive flex characteristics that balance stiffness with a uniquely soft feel underfoot. This construction minimizes the flex caused by the extreme torsional forces generated by the foil's front wing and stabilizer. High-quality 316 stainless steel and titanium hardware practically eliminate corrosion and ensure a natural, precise fit. On the stabilizer, polycarbonate Pro Shims allow for incremental half-degree changes in pitch, enabling incredibly easy tuning of the foil's flight characteristics.
