Wingsurfing is an exciting new water sport!
Wingsurfing offers numerous advantages over other water sports. For one, you don't need big waves or high wind speeds to have fun.
Even with light wind, you can glide on the water and improve your skills.
In addition, wingsurfing is very accessible and easy to learn. Within a few hours, you can already achieve initial successes and enjoy the feeling of flying on the water.
You can practice the sport in various waters, whether in the sea, a lake, or a river.
Furthermore, the equipment is relatively light and compact, making it easy to transport and store. This makes wingsurfing ideal for people who want to spontaneously pursue their water sport.
Although wingsurfing is an exciting and fun activity, one should still take some safety precautions.
It is important to check the weather forecast and only go on the water in suitable conditions. You should also always wear a life jacket and regularly check the equipment to avoid accidents.
All in all, wingsurfing is an emerging water sport that offers many possibilities and fun for surfers of all skill levels. With some practice and passion, you can improve your skills and enjoy the feeling of flying on the water.
Practicing even makes sense and is fun on land. Anyone with a skateboard can easily try it out on a large parking lot on the weekend and learn the first tricks for the water.
In wing foiling, the water sports enthusiast stands on a foil board and is pulled forward by the wing.
The Foilboard
What is the difference between a special foil board and the previously mentioned SUP or surfboard?
Well, let's start with the board volume. Above, we said that the board should have such a large volume that the rider can stand on it safely. Only in this way can a good introduction to this sport be found. The foil board is then, so to speak, the next level, one step further, for advanced users. The volume of the board is significantly lower and can decrease with further progress in skill. So, the better you get, the smaller the board can become.
Why is this so? Because when foiling, you practically fly with the foil through/over the water, the board volume is only important when starting, at takeoff. After that, the board has no direct contact with the water. For hot maneuvers or speed kicks, a small board is clearly advantageous.
Such a surfboard usually consists of an EPS foam core with various laminate variants that surround the core and form the outer layer. In the area of the standing surfaces, for example, wood or carbon surfaces are often incorporated. These offer excellent rigidity and stability. EVA decks are used as the top layer. They form the soft standing surface, on which foot straps can be mounted if necessary.
Meanwhile, there are also numerous inflatable wing foil boards. They are filled with air like an iSUP and have a reinforced plate in the area of the foil mount for stabilization. The clear advantage here is that they can be folded compactly after the session.
The Foil
It is a wing that is located underwater. Held by a long mast, which in turn is attached to the board.
A wing? So like on an airplane? – Exactly. The same physical laws of aerodynamics (why an airplane can fly) also follow the laws of hydrodynamics underwater. Don't worry, we won't explain this in detail. The fact is, however, that this outstanding technical innovation makes it possible to fly over the water with the board and the wing!
The wings are called -> front wing & back wing. These are usually made of carbon and are connected by the so-called -> fuselage. It can be made of aluminum or carbon.
The mast has no special name and is also made of aluminum in many models. However, some manufacturers also offer carbon or plastic.
However, a foil can do even more than just be combined with wing sports. There are also special windsurfing foil boards. Even in kiting, there are special boards with a foil underneath.
If you don't have wind at your spot, you can generate the necessary propulsion yourself by pumping – the so-called pump foiling is becoming more and more common.
